Imagine a film with a documentary format for most of it, with the ability to change your sympathies half way through, with special effects that are done just enough so they don't look cheesy, with engaging dialogue, excellent acting, and ray guns that blow things up into either a fine spray of muck or a fiery ball. Then imagine a film that does all of this and doesn't take itself seriously to boot.
This should give you a good idea of how awesome this film is.
District 9 shows a realistic reaction to aliens by the world population. Set in South Africa, the film catches the audience up by setting up the documentary it is mimicking; the information given, however, treats the audience as if they've actually lived in this world with these events.
The cast is incredible, and the dialogue isn't over the top, and the story is incredible. The CG is simple enough, and applied expertly, so we get the best of the images without the technology or budget being stretched.
I can't gush about this film enough. It's worth the evening ticket price, and it is definitely going into our DVD collection when it comes out. It's incredible on the big screen, definitely go see it while it's in theaters.
To sum up:
