View Full Version : opinions on Metallica
I've overheard a conversation my dear opty was having on the phone (no I wasn't eavesdropping on purpose but she can be loud, shocking I know)
Well it brought me to a question I think needs to be discussed by the music nerds among us...which is most of us.
Do you think Mettalica would have made it as big if Cliff lived and stayed in the band?
What do you think their best album was? (I know that's a hard one to say)
All of this is purely opinionated so there is no right or wrong answer...but discuss :)
EAVESDROPPER!!!!!!!!!!!!! oh wait.....i'm not here......:D

Hmmm it's really hard to say. I personally believe that they would have been successful, but maby not as big as they had become before. If I had to pick which albums I enjoyed the most, I'd have to say "Master Of Puppets" and "Black Album." But I've also listened to their new album "Death Magnetic" and I quite enjoyed this one. It seems to me that they are trying to go back to there roots with this album. I much liked this better than "Load" and "Reloaded":disgust: That's just my:twocents:

I will only answer this one if Opty keeps her DVDs to herself.
I think they would have become successful regardless and my fave albums are Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning. I also agree that Death Magnetic is really good and I like it alot.
(now, let's see how good Opty's aim is from a state away....they really should bring Dave Mustaine back...)
OK OK OK I was just kidding **Starts reapplying for membership**

Hmmmm, good question Tang! I dunno if they would have made it as big w/ Cliff, but I have a hunch they would not have. As for fave album, I'd have to say a tie between Garage Days Re-revisited and Master of Puppets. Still love Kill 'Em All too, though I haven't listened to any of their albums since And Justice for All -- that's still "new" Metallica to me. Shit. Does that make me old?!?!:yikes:

i dont much care for any of their albums outside Master of Puppets, ...And Justice for All, and Ride the Lightning. otherwise i'd say the rest of their things are very mediocre. Death Magnetic, in my opinion is atrocious.

 Your entitled to your opinion, but I still think Black Album and Death Magnetic are good tunes.

well, I honestly think that they would definately have not sold out as soon, and it's hard to say whether they would have or not if cliff had not have passed on, one thing is for sure...... Cliff would NOT have stood for the band selling out and he would have told james and lars to fuck off. Then he probably would have started his own solo band and kept up the tradition of kicking ass.
as far as their their old albums, I would have to say and justice is my favorite album. I too have heard death magnetic and I am impressed. Metallica finally went back to their roots(to a point).

hehehe thanks... i learnededed it the old way without all those fancy aminals singin it.
You see I don't their change of styles as selling out as much as I see it as going a different direction. As people grow, which they normally do throughout their lives, it's natural to pursue different directions. It just so happens that mettallica at one point decided they wanted to start sucking for a few albums.
However, unlike some others, I happen to love the black album as much as I do their earlier stuff. Is it a different feel, without a doubt yes, but it's still very good stuff. As far as what influenced other bands more, it wasn't the black album, but rather their earlier work. The raw energy, driving guitar licks, powerful base lines coupled with great vocals mixed in with classical style music was simply incredible.
Would they have made it as big...probably. But I don't think they would have been any bigger.

You see, I agree that going in a different direction doesn't neccissarily mean selling out. Look at rob zombie, when he went solo, he went more industrial, but it still kicked ass.
Metallica, on the other hand, I DO believe that they sold out. Not neccissarily with the black album, which I think is actually a pretty decent album, just not my favorite.
